Nicholas Papadopoulos was born in Nicosia on April 22nd 1973. 

He studied law (LLB, Barrister-at-Law) at the University College London. During his studies he became active in student politics and served as Chairman of the National Union of Cypriot Students of the UK (EFEK).

Upon his return to Cyprus he started working as a lawyer at the firm “Tassos Papadopoulos & Associates”, founded by his father, Tassos Papadopoulos, the former President of the Republic of Cyprus.

Parallel to his professional activity, he began to develop significant political and party activity, through the Youth Organisation of the Democratic Party and then as a member of the Executive Committee of the Democratic Party. In March 2009 he was elected as Vice President of the Democratic Party and went on to undertake the responsibility of heading the Finance Committee of the Party and the corresponding working groups which are responsible for planning and promoting the political positions of the Party in relation to the economy of the nation. 

In the Parliamentary Elections of 2006 he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Nicosia as part of the Democratic Party ballot and was at the time the youngest Member of Parliament to be elected. During his first term he became a member of the Parliamentary Finance Committee, the Committee primarily responsible for the approval of the state budget. In 2009 he was appointed Chairman of that Committee. His appointment coincided with the first signs of financial strife for Cyprus and through this position he became especially vocal and active in promoting a policy of austerity and re-organization of government finances. At the time, he was only one of two Members of Parliament who warned of the impending problems that the country would come into unless strict measures in relation to the public sector were implemented. On two separate occasions and through his Party he designed and proposed a combination of austerity as well as development measures, both for the public and the private sector, including calling for professional and long-term planning of the exploitation of the country’s natural gas reserves. Although his proposals were not supported by the Government at the time, his insistence for the need for measures to be taken were well received by the public especially as the consequences of the financial crisis were beginning to be felt and as a result in 2011 he was re-elected as Member of Parliament, having received the largest number of votes cast for his Party. 

On December 1st 2013 he was elected as President of the Democratic Party. He was re-elected, unopposed, in 2018 and in 2023 and in this capacity, he is a Member of the National Council. He stopped practicing law in 2014, while he had already left the Tassos Papadopoulos and Associates Law Office.

In the 2018 Presidential Elections, he stood as a candidate for the President of the Republic, taking 26% of the votes.

He is married to Yiota Kyprianidou with whom they have four children, Elena, Michelle, Anastasia and Tassos.
